So when Well on Their Way reached out to see if I would be interested in joining the point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training in Gulu I didn’t have to think twice.

This was my first time in Uganda – and the continent of Africa – and I am officially hooked! There are many things that make the country so special: the red clay roads lined with mango and Savanna trees, the food (especially the chapati) and most notably, the people. The Acholi people are best compared to the sunshine: warm & bright. Everyone was so welcoming and kind, and they were incredibly proud to share their rich culture with me.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”20px||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The Training Impact

The 10-day training program began in the classroom with didactics, hands-on practice with phantoms and live models. We then transitioned to various health centres every day with a 2-to-l trainee-to-trainer model, which maximized scan time for the midwives.

On our first day at Cwero Health Centre Ill we had over 50 pregnant women lined up hoping for a scan! The women of Gulu District are just as excited about this training as we are. Throughout our short time there, we referred many women to higher-risk centres for conditions that simply could not be diagnosed without ultrasound. It was a powerful reminder of how vital this technology is for maternal and fetal health.

Looking Forward

I cannot say enough about how amazing these midwives are. They spent countless hours in the months before our arrival studying to ensure the best results. In just a short time, we built beautiful relationships, making it hard to say good-bye.

I am excited to remain a part of the continuing education for the midwives through remote image review and hope to provide more ultrasound training in the future. WOtW has a wonderful team based in Uganda and support from the Ministry of Health of Gulu District to ensure the program’s long-term success.

This may have been my first trip to Uganda, but it certainly will not be my last.

—Jade Lavender, BSc, CRGS, RDMS

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://wellontheirway.org/dev/wp-content/uploads/030726-jade-7.png” alt=”WOTW Ultrasound Training in Gulu” title_text=”030726-jade-7″ _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][difl_packerygallery gallery=”276936,276935,276938,276939,276940″ pg_layout=”four” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” space_between=”10px” use_lightbox=”on” overlay=”on” overlay_primary=”rgba(0,0,0,0)” overlay_secondary=”#000000″ show_caption=”on” content_position=”c4-layout-bottom-center” caption_text_color=”#FFFFFF” caption_font_size=”15px” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][/difl_packerygallery][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” max_width=”50%” custom_css_main_element=”float:left;” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Three of my favourite things include travel, ultrasound & people. There are chickens walking by at this rural health clinic. It took us over an hour to get here over mostly dirt roads. The sun has been out all day and the temperature has gotten into the mid-90’s.

When we are scanning, there are 5 of us all in a very small room: the pregnant mother, the 2 trainees, the teaching ultrasonographer and myself. Outside of our room, 5 pregnant mothers are mostly lying on the floor waiting their turn to have an ultrasound scan. The heat of the day has caused many of the patients to begin to wilt so they are trying to rest and stay somewhat cool.

Our 2 midwife trainees show an amazing capacity to keep on working and maintaining intense concentration given the trying conditions. Obstetric ultrasound is a skill that is very challenging to acquire and seeing the midwives jump right in and wanting to learn everything they can is truly inspiring.

Maneuvering the probe with one hand is a skill all its own. Knowing when and how much to angle, slide, rock or rotate the probe to get the correct view and image while looking at and adjusting the tablet screen with your other hand is not easy. After just a couple of days of scanning they are now easily identifying crucial landmarks and structures.

There have been mostly healthy babies seen on the scans but there have been medical conditions that have been identified that require close follow up or urgent treatment. It is already obvious that the introduction of obstetric ultrasound will have a huge impact on this community. Given the commitment of our trainees, I feel very confident that their skills will continue to improve as they help the people they serve.
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src="https://wellontheirway.org/dev/wp-content/uploads/blog-3-2-26-matt-2.png" alt="WOTW Ultrasound Training in Gulu" title_text="blog-3-2-26-matt-2" _builder_version="4.27.5" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src="https://wellontheirway.org/dev/wp-content/uploads/blog-3-2-26-matt-1-scaled.png" alt="WOTW team members conducting Ultrasound Training " title_text="blog-3-2-26-matt-1" _builder_version="4.27.5" _module_preset="default" custom_padding="0px||||false|false" global_colors_info="{}"][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version="4.27.5" _module_preset="default" text_font_size="24px" text_orientation="center" custom_margin="0px||||false|false" custom_padding="0px||||false|false" custom_css_main_element="font-style:italic; " custom_css_free_form="font -style:italic; " global_colors_info="{}"]
Well on Their Way Team Conducting Ultrasound Training
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version="4.27.0" _module_preset="default" max_width="50%" custom_css_main_element="float:left;" locked="off" global_colors_info="{}"][/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]
[43

post-276930","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news
["GET
