About Our Process

A Trainer of Trainer Model

Using a Trainer of Trainer model, volunteer U.S. health professionals work in partnership with Ugandan health professionals to provide training and mentoring to health care providers (nurses, midwives, and clinical officers) throughout Gulu District to ensure that every provider who may be called upon to care for a pregnant mother, has the requisite skills to safely care for mothers during normal labor and delivery and recognize and manage obstetric and newborn emergencies.

WOtW’s training reaches over 100 health care providers staffing 26 health centers scattered miles apart. These providers attend over 3000 deliveries annually.

Partnering with Master Midwives

Training implementation involves close collaboration with a group of highly skilled Ugandan midwives to ensure that each training is consistent with Ugandan Ministry of Health guidelines and applicable to the realities of the setting in which the health care providers work. The US and Ugandan teams combine medical knowledge, donated materials and established training programs with Ministry of Health guidelines and social/cultural frameworks to create broadly applicable training programs. The US and Ugandan teams are proud of our project, as it is built on a foundation of collaboration based on shared respect, planning and decision making, with the vision of ensuring that every mother and baby gets off to a healthy start.

How you can help

Through our Trainer of Trainer model, we empower nurses, midwives, and clinical officers to deliver safe and effective care during labor and delivery. Our training programs are developed in close partnership with skilled Ugandan midwives, aligning with Ministry of Health guidelines and reflecting the local context. By combining medical expertise, donated resources, and a spirit of collaboration, we strive to give every mother and baby the healthy start they deserve. Support our mission by making a donation today.

"With all the trainings in the different modules that I’ve received, we have trained so many midwives and it has given a lot of impact to our communities…Our midwives are able to monitor mothers in labour effectively. They are able to make a diagnosis in case something is going wrong with the mother because of the training we have undergone"

"They [the health care providers] can manage mothers who have come with pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. They can manage babies who are born with asphyxia and we have evidence with the data where the number of children/babies born with asphyxia are successfully resuscitated and at the end of the day they walk well on their way with their mother back home."

– Apiyo Susan

“Then when the baby, again, was not improving, then I tried to stimulate the baby. Again, the baby was not waking up properly. Then, the baby was not yet breathing in. That is where I fixed my mask. Then I started ventilating the baby. And the baby survived! I’d like to thank the office of the DHO, so much, In collaboration with Step-Up (WOtW) organization to help us. Now it is easier for us to help our babies who may in with asphyxia during birth.”
